Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an M.D. and a D.O.?
When one decides to be a doctor, there are actually two ways to achieve the title of doctor and practice medicine. One can become a medical doctor (M.D.) or a doctor of osteopathy (D.O.). Both licenses allow one to practice medicine and have equally rigorous training and testing. The difference between an M.D. and a D.O. lies primarily in philosophy of how to practice medicine.

In most cases, the four years of medical school are quite similar. However, the D.O. receives training in muscular and skeletal manipulation. A doctor who is a D.O. tends to evaluate a person's health in terms of viewing the body as a complex related network. Any disease affects the whole body. Although both D.O.'s and M.D.'s can and do specialize, the emphasis on D.O. training is in primary care. M.D. training places emphasis on advanced study of disease and pathology.

Some D.O.s practice osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), which means using various hands on techniques to the musculoskeletal system for diagnosis and treatment. This method may take slightly more time than that of the traditional medical diagnosis and treatment.

We are very pleased at Family Practice of Cadillac to be able to offer you both board certified M.D.s and D.O.s.
